Steve McCurry explaining "Shoe Store" 1992

Posted 2012-06-06 16:53:15 | Views: 16,284

1992: Shoe store, Kabul, Afghanistan
These burqa-clad women shopping for modern sneakers from the West were an extraordinary sight, McCurry said. ‘It is the juxtaposition… that evokes strong emotions. There’s a seeming incongruity when you see an image like this. Taking the picture, you’re not thinking about this but you’re reacting much more from a gut feeling. from ‘The Unguarded Moment.' Flying Houses

Kudos for Chehere Laurent, a French artist who impresses with photographs and handling them very successful with the subject matter. Indeed, it plays with the clichés of houses and buildings to levitate in the air, giving a surreal rendering of the most beautiful effect. They seem so real. It's so cool to see real life images used to make surreal/twisted realities. This is something a painting could never do!

It's a plane...

Blastphemy! - Superhero Statue Saints

Posted 2012-06-06 14:22:16 | Views: 17,148

Italian artist Igor Scalisi Palminteri from Palermo has always been fascinated by religiosity. For his series of sculptures titled Hagiographies, Palminteri transformed statues of saints, purchased in the street markets of Palermo, into superheroes by repainting the sacred works with bright acrylic paint, masking their faces and converting their traditional robes into capes and superhero garb bearing their recognizable symbols. Make of it what you will…

Continuous Curve Chair

The outline of this chair describes a continuous curve from the back legs through the backrest, arm and front legs. A form in which all of the structural elements of a chair seem to melt into one.

Solar Equation: Giant Moon Installation

Posted 2012-05-22 10:59:00 | Views: 15,969

This large installation entitled Solar Equation is a simulation of the Sun, 100 million times smaller than the real thing! The sphere, commissioned by the Light in Winter Festival in Australia, is the largest spherical balloon in the world.

Using mathematical equations, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer developed a pattern of animations that are projected onto the sphere, and that never repeat. Through this simulation, the artist provides the public with a glimpse of the Sun’s unpredictable and intense atmosphere. The public can interact with the installation and affect these animations via an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad application, creating various visual experiences. It’s hard to imagine seeing such a large, burning star so gigantic and up-close.

Fabienne Verdier: Big Brushing It

Posted 2012-04-23 15:29:24 | Views: 16,142

Fabienne Verdier is a painter of contemporary French, born 3 March 1962 in Paris. ‘She paints on large floor-standing chassis with new tools she has crafted herself and that enable a new approach of line and shape. It seeks to explore the relationship between movement, matter and the fundamental force of gravitation. She regularly exhibits his work in Europe. It came in many collections, including the Centre Pompidou , the Musée Cernuschi in Paris or the foundation H.Looser in Zurich.

Verdier’s studio is an instrument in her art. It was designed as a retreat for her preparatory ascetic practice, physical engagement and "excavation" of form which provide the basis of the act of painting.

The space is on a scale with her monumental works, allowing the artist to hang an enormous paintbrush and view the paintings from a distance via the mezzanine... The studio is beyond a mere refuge, it is a tool without which her works may never have been born. Dolorès Marat’s photographic essay faithfully portrays the full importance of the studio space to Fabienne Verdier’s work.

The Paintings of Aramis Gutierrez

Posted 2012-04-05 23:10:53 | Views: 18,428

Aramis Gutierrez

Aramis Gutierrez unpacks narrative conflict with a diligence evident in the medium of oil painting itself. Gutierrez’s imposing canvases frame classic entanglements of romantic and pragmatic relationships, ambition, betrayal, and mortality. His mythologies equate sun blisters and love pains, labyrinthine woods and Evolutionary Psychology. The result is an effervescent study of beauty, longevity, and neurosis within human drama and the history of painting.

Aramis Gutierrez was born in Pittsburgh, PA and lives and works in Miami, FL.  He studied at Cooper Union where he received his BFA in painting in 1998. He has exhibited in New York, Philadelphia, Miami, Istanbul, and elsewhere. His recent exhibitions include the group show The Wilderness at Miami Art Museum (2011).

I LOVE ME SOME BECKMANN, MAN!

While living his last years in NYC, Beckmann's art took a colorful and ambitious turn. With the liberation of the Netherlands in 1945, Beckmann had an exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. The next year he had a major exhibition at the Curt Valentin gallery in New York City. In 1947 he accepted an invitation to teach at Washington University in St. Louis. The following year the City Art Museum of St. Louis gave him a retrospective, which brought him the highest acclaim in the art world. In 1949 Beckmann received first prize at the Carnegie International and taught at the Brooklyn Art Museum. In the summer of 1950 he died in New York.

The artist did some great paintings and got some great respect in his final years.
